PHILADELPHIA --
More than a dozen men are accused of having sex in the men's room of a well-known Philadelphia store.
They were snared in an undercover police sting that was carried out inside the Strawbridges store in the heart of Center City's shopping district.
The Philadelphia Police Department's vice squad told NBC 10 News that the managers at the store called them when they suspected illegal sexual activity was taking place in the bathroom on the second floor.
A sting was set up and conducted over five-hour period. Investigators said that a least 50 men came through the bathroom during that period of time, but police were only able to arrest 16.
One store employee was stunned by the activity.
"I'm not opposed to 16 men having sex, but in the Strawbridges it's kind of weird. It is kind of weird. I work here so, I mean, it is weird," said Stephanie Burns.
The men ranged in age from 21 to 80. They were white, African-American, Asian and Latino.
Police sources said that some of the men wore wedding bands, but they were all caught in lewd acts -- including prostitution.
"I can't imagine sex -- no matter who you have it with -- you figure you would want to have it in privacy. It boggles my mind to think about it. I'm glad I didn't walk in on it, on account of I think I'd faint," one man said.
"It is a sign of what's happening in the world today as far as people's sexual orientations and what they had to do to feed those desires. (It's) something that should have been dealt with a while ago, but this is not the first time this has happened," another man on the street said.
An investigator with the vice squad confirmed that one year ago, 11 men were arrested on the sixth floor of the same store.
One gay advocate said he doesn't appreciate the actions of the men involved and the reflection it makes on the gay community.
"It's also very much in bad taste. It certainly doesn't have to be with all the freedoms that gay people have today," said Mel Heifetz, a gay advocate.
The charges against the men include lewd acts, prostitution and indecent exposure, all misdemeanors.
Police told NBC 10 New that the Strawbridge men's room is listed on several chat rooms for gay men.
This isn't the first time there have been reports of sexual activity in Strawbridge's men's room. Several dozen people have been arrested in the store's bathrooms over the last few years. NBC 10 News first reported the story in 1998.
